Somebody painted a 1928 Mediterranean formal room the color of a sunset and hung bold contemporary art right in the middle of all that history, and it's absolutely gorgeous, exactly the kind of confidence I want to see in a house this old.

This one's stuck with me since I first came across it in Architectural Digest.

It's a 1928 Mediterranean estate in Hancock Park, built by the architecture firm Dedrick, Bobbe & Dolena early in what would become James Dolena's career, the same architect who later designed Casa Encantada, the Boddy House, and the Walt Disney estate, and it's been restored by June Street Architecture with a level of care you can feel in every photo.

What got me is the color. Someone had the nerve to paint one of the formal rooms a dusty salmon pink under the original wood-beamed ceiling and hang a saturated blue and yellow sculpture right in the middle of all that history, and it's absolutely gorgeous, exactly the kind of confident, collected taste that makes a room feel like someone's real life instead of a decorator's checklist.

The rest of the house holds up its end too, a checkerboard-tiled foyer under groin vaults, arched steel-framed loggias opening straight onto the pool, a kitchen finished in Calacatta Monet marble, a two-bedroom ADU wing with its own pool access, a bocce court, an eight-car motor court, and a lower-level movie theater, all sitting on almost half an acre with five bedrooms, nine baths, and 9,475 square feet, listed at $16,900,000.

I don't usually fall for a house through a magazine spread, but this one earned it. If bold and beautifully done is your language too, I've got you.
